DDS
Group Home
project description
GMI was given the opportunity to reimagine and redesign DDS’s basis of design for group homes and to design beyond the norm and create a more sustainable and forward thinking residence.
Massachusetts’s Department of Developmental Services existing Group Home in Middleton was built in 1860 and its neglect throughout the years had resulted in water damage, mold infiltration, and general disrepair. Lacking proper maintenance and care that would be necessary for renovations of a building of that age, DDS decided to investigate the impact and cost of demolishing the abandoned structure and rebuilding a new (2) unit group home. After an extensive study evaluating site conditions, programmatic options, and incorporating best practices, the new Middleton Cottage design was formed.
While taking into account the natural slope of the site, the new (2) unit/8 resident group home would provide at-grade entrances, fully accessible living and sleeping spaces, a common fitness center, outdoor recreation space and covered porches.
Due to the nature of the program and the residents who will be living here, all fixtures and finishes are appropriate for a high abuse environment while still being reminiscent of a single family residence. By incorporating traditional styling into durable materials, we’ve created a home that will help to foster a sense of place for the residents and provide a sense of security and safety for the staff.
